If you've typed "mocktails near FIU" into your phone, you probably already know the usual answer: a soda with a lime wedge, handed over like an apology. The Library does it differently. It's a 1920s prohibition-inspired speakeasy behind a bookcase inside specialTEA Lounge, on the Coral Way corridor just minutes from FIU, and its zero-proof drinks are built from the same loose-leaf teas that go into the cocktails. Five of them sit on the menu, from $5 to $8, and none of them feel like a consolation prize.
Here's what's on that list, who it's for, and how to plan a night out when you're not drinking (or just not drinking much).
The mocktails near FIU worth ordering
The section on the menu is called specialTEA Mocktails, and the name is the whole idea. Because The Library lives inside a tea lounge, the bar has a shelf of teas and tisanes most cocktail bars simply don't, and it uses them to give alcohol-free drinks the body and bitterness that spirits usually supply.
- Berry Rosey Mojito ($8). Berry Rosey Oolong, rose syrup, lime juice, freshly muddled mint and sparkling water. It's the closest thing on the list to a classic cocktail, bright and minty with a floral finish from the oolong.
- Golden Spice Mule ($8). Golden Spice Herbal Tisane with Fever Tree ginger beer, agave syrup and lime juice. If you like a drink with some heat and a little backbone, start here.
- Strawberry Guava Sour ($8). Strawberry Guava Fruit Tisane, lemon juice and agave. Fruity without being candy, and about as Miami as a flavor combination gets.
- Yuzu Fizz ($5). Yuzu syrup and sparkling water. Simple, citrusy and a good palate reset between rounds.
- Lemon Fizz ($5). Lemon juice, simple syrup and sparkling water. The easy one, for when you just want something cold and clean in a nice glass.
A tip from someone who's watched a few tables order: the three $8 drinks are the ones that feel like a proper order, and the two fizzes are what you switch to later in the night. Mixing them works well if you're pacing yourself until 1 AM.
Who actually orders them
More people than you'd think. The designated driver is the obvious one, and in a part of Miami where nearly everyone drove in, that matters. But there are also grad students with an early class, people who are taking a month off, folks on medication, and plenty who simply like a well-made drink and don't care whether there's rum in it.
The nice thing about a speakeasy is that nobody's checking what's in your glass. The room is candlelit, the drinks come out looking the part, and a Berry Rosey Mojito sits on the table next to a Purple Prose without anyone needing to explain anything. If half your group is drinking and half isn't, everybody still gets something made by hand, and you're not stuck splitting the night between two different bars.
One thing to know before you plan around it: The Library is 21 and over, so bring ID even if your order is zero-proof. That makes it a good fit for a cocktail lounge near FIU for grad students, faculty and anyone past their 21st, rather than a spot for a mixed-age crowd.
Pairing a zero-proof night with the rest of the menu
The bites are small and shareable, which suits a drinks-first night. The Prohibition Era Bites run from Midnight Marinated Olives ($5) to Bookie's Shrimp Cocktail ($13), and the Boardwalk Cannoli Duo ($10) is the dessert move. Nothing here is a full dinner, so eat beforehand if you're coming straight from class.
If someone at your table is drinking, the specialTEA Cocktails use the same teas as the mocktails. Oolong & Juliet ($16), for example, is built on the same Berry Rosey Oolong as the mojito, so you can order matching drinks with and without the rum. It's a small thing, but it makes the table feel like it's having the same night.
Worth knowing before the check comes: a 20% automatic gratuity is added to every check, and all of it goes to the staff. It's printed right on the menu.
Planning your night
The Library is open Wednesday through Saturday, 6 PM to 1 AM, at 10766 SW 24th St. You pick the time you'll arrive when you reserve, then stay as long as you like until close. Each arrival time only holds a handful of people, which is why the room never feels crowded.
A reservation always gets you in, because your library card scans you through the street door. Walk-ins come through the bookcase inside specialTEA Lounge while it's open, but on busy nights it locks and it's reservations only, so check the live walk-in status on the homepage or the Find Us page before you head over. Wednesdays tend to fill up because of karaoke night, which, for the record, is a great night to be the sober one holding the song list.
It's cocktail attire, so dress for the room, and there's free parking in the plaza lot out front. Groups bigger than four should email the team ahead of time.
If you're the one not drinking this weekend, you don't have to settle for a soda at the end of the bar. Reserve a time at The Library, claim your card, and order the Golden Spice Mule. Just keep the address to yourself.
