November is here, and if you just finished a month off, the question isn't really whether to go out. It's where, and what to order once you get there. A good sober October Miami bar for the first night back is somewhere quiet enough to taste what's in the glass and with a zero-proof list good enough that you can switch back whenever you like. The Library fits that. It's a 1920s prohibition-inspired speakeasy on the Coral Way corridor near FIU, open Wednesday through Saturday, 6 PM to 1 AM, with a fall seasonal menu that's still on the list right now.
We've already written about getting through October without a drink. This one's about what comes after: the first cocktail in a while, and how to make it a good one.
Why a quiet cocktail bar beats a loud one for your first night back
After thirty days off, your first drink is going to taste louder than you remember. That's half the fun, and it's also why the room matters. A packed club with a DJ and a two-deep bar pushes you toward ordering fast and ordering often. A quiet cocktail bar in Miami, with candlelight, a reservation and a seat that's actually yours, does the opposite. You sit, you look at the menu, you take your time.
That's how The Library works anyway. Your reservation sets when you arrive, not when you leave, so there's no pressure to rush a round before the next group sits down. If you want the calmest version of the room, Wednesday and early-evening seatings are the easy pick, and Friday and Saturday are for lingering until close.
Picking the first cocktail after Sober October
Most people come back from a month off wanting one drink that's worth the wait, not five that blur together. A few ways to think about it, all straight off the menu.
If you want something that tastes like the season
The fall seasonal cocktails are all $15, and they make a strong case for coming back in November instead of waiting for the holidays. The Caramel Orchard Mule is Ketel One with spiced caramel apple butter, fresh lime and ginger beer, so it's bright and bubbly rather than heavy. The PSM After Dark is Tito's, pumpkin spice and fresh espresso, basically an autumn espresso martini. The Witches Brew pairs Grey Whale Gin with matcha, oat milk and agave, which is a nice bridge if you spent October drinking a lot of tea. And the Fallen Maple Leaf is Shortbarrel Bourbon with pure maple and brown sugar syrup, spirit-forward and a little sweet.
If you missed rye
Anyone searching for a rye whiskey bar in Miami will find more than one option here. The Manhattan ($16) is Bulleit Rye with sweet vermouth and Angostura, about as classic as it gets. The Collector's Vault ($17) is Bulleit 95 Rye with chocolate liqueur, dry curacao and orange and chocolate bitters, richer and slower. The house Old Fashioned ($18) is built on Jack Daniel's Bonded Rye. Any of the three is a drink to sip for a long while, which is exactly the pace you want on night one.
If you'd rather ease in
Not every first drink has to be a cocktail. A glass of the Sparkling ($6) or the house red or white ($7) is a lighter way to mark the occasion. And the specialTEA Mocktails are still right there. The Berry Rosey Mojito, Golden Spice Mule and Strawberry Guava Sour are $8 each, and the Yuzu Fizz and Lemon Fizz are $5. Plenty of people coming off a month like this alternate: one cocktail, then a mocktail, then decide. If you're looking for a non alcoholic cocktail bar in Miami that doesn't treat the zero-proof side as an afterthought, the habit you built in October doesn't have to end with it.
Give the night a shape
The easiest first nights out are the ones built around something other than the drinks. On Thursdays, Dade County Comedy brings free stand-up to the room at 9 PM. If you've been hunting for a Thursday comedy night in Miami, the comedy page has the details, and it suggests arriving around 8 or 8:30 so you're seated with a drink before the first comic walks up. An hour of laughing makes one good cocktail last a lot longer than it would at a bar rail.
Food helps too. The Prohibition Era Bites are made for sharing: Midnight Marinated Olives ($5), the Bootlegger's Cheeseball ($8), or Bookie's Shrimp Cocktail ($13) if you're celebrating. A plate on the table keeps the evening about conversation. If you've got an anniversary coming up this month, the same rules apply. A quiet room, a reservation and one really good drink each is a better anniversary cocktail bar plan in Miami than a crowded rooftop.
One small thing to know before the check: a 20% automatic gratuity is added to every check, and it goes to the staff. It's printed right on the menu.
Getting in
The Library is at 10766 SW 24th St, with free parking in the plaza lot out front and street parking on SW 24th St. A reservation always gets you in, because your library card scans you through the street door. Walk-ins come through the bookcase inside specialTEA Lounge while the bookshelf is open, but on busy nights it locks to walk-ins, so check the live walk-in status on the homepage or the Find Us page before you head over. It's cocktail attire, so dress for the room.
You waited a month for this drink. Make it count. Reserve a time at The Library, claim your card, and keep the address to yourself.
