A Speakeasy With Reservations in Miami for Birthdays

Some birthdays want a dance floor and a crowd. Others want a candlelit table, a few people you actually like, and a drink someone made by hand. If you're in the second camp, a speakeasy with reservations in Miami is the easiest way to get that night without leaving it to luck. The Library is a 1920s prohibition-inspired speakeasy behind a bookcase inside specialTEA Lounge, on the Coral Way corridor near FIU, and it's built for exactly this size of celebration: small, a little secret, and easy to plan.

Here's how to turn a birthday, an anniversary or a quiet promotion toast into a night at the room behind the bookcase.

Why a speakeasy with reservations in Miami works for celebrations

The trouble with celebrating somewhere popular is the door. You show up with five people and a birthday person in their good outfit, and the night starts with standing around. At The Library, a reservation always gets you in. Your library card scans you through the street door, so the guest of honor walks straight into candlelight, Art Deco brass, worn leather and live jazz instead of a line.

Walk-ins come through the bookcase inside specialTEA Lounge while the bookshelf is open, but on busy nights it locks to walk-ins. That's fine for a spontaneous Wednesday. For a birthday, it's not a gamble worth taking, so reserve your time and the door is sorted. If you want to check before you head over anyway, the live walk-in status sits on the homepage.

The other thing that makes it work is the size of the room. We space out arrivals so the room never feels crowded, and each arrival time only holds a handful of people. That's good news for a celebration. You can hear the toast, you can hear each other, and nobody has to shout happy birthday over a DJ.

Booking a birthday: arrival times, groups and the 21+ rule

The reservation is the time you arrive, not a time limit. Once you're in, the night is yours until we close at 1 AM. We're open Wednesday through Saturday, 6 PM to 1 AM, so pick the night that suits the birthday person and the arrival time closest to when your group will realistically walk in.

A few practical notes for planning:

  • Small groups book online. The form lets you bring up to three guests, so parties of four or fewer can be booked in about a minute.
  • More than four of you? Email the team from the reservation page and they'll sort it out, rather than you splitting the group across separate times.
  • The time you wanted is full? Same thing, email the team to see if there's room. Arrival times fill, especially late in the week.
  • Plans changed? Fill the form out again with the same phone number and the new time takes over.

Age matters for a birthday crowd, so get it straight before you send the invite. The Library is 21 and over, so bring identification. The one exception is Thursday's comedy night, which is 18 and over. If anyone in your group is turning 21 this year, a speakeasy 21 and up in Miami is a pretty good place to do it properly, just make sure the ID comes along.

And here's the part people like: your phone number becomes your card number, so every guest who books gets their own library card. You can also claim your card ahead of time and keep it on your phone until the night.

Pick the night that fits the birthday person

Each night at The Library has its own personality, so match it to the person you're celebrating.

Wednesday is for the performer. Doors open at six and the microphone comes out at nine. If the birthday person has a signature song they've been waiting to inflict on everyone, this is the night. It's a karaoke bar with craft cocktails in a candlelit 1920s room, which is a very different thing from a stage in a sports bar. See the details on our karaoke page, and note that Wednesdays fill up.

Thursday is for the one who laughs loudest. Dade County Comedy presents Laughs at the Library, free stand-up at nine. Reserve an arrival time around 8 or 8:30 and your table is settled with a drink before the first comic walks up. More on the comedy page.

Friday and Saturday are for the classic night out. No microphone and no show, just candlelight, the bar and a long evening that belongs to your table. The Library is a live jazz speakeasy in Miami at heart, and if you're planning an anniversary or a milestone birthday around a weekend, book early, because each arrival time only holds a handful of people.

What to order, and what to wear

The bar is built on the classics, with prohibition-era recipes and modern technique across sixteen taps. For a toast, the house sparkling is Silver Gate Vineyards Brut at $6 a glass, which makes a round for the table easy. The cocktail list goes further: the Old Fashioned is the house staple, and the specialTEA cocktails pair spirits with loose-leaf teas, like Purple Prose with lavender and butterfly pea flower rum. Not everyone drinks, and the menu has them in mind too, with mocktails like the Berry Rosey Mojito.

For the table, the Flapper's Trio of finger sandwiches is $12 and the Bootlegger's Cheeseball is easy to share. When it's time for something sweet, the Boardwalk Cannoli Duo is $10, one pistachio chocolate and one espresso, which works nicely as a birthday dessert for two. The full list is on the menu page. One planning note for whoever is splitting the bill: a 20% automatic gratuity is added to all checks, and it all goes directly to the staff.

As for what to wear to a speakeasy, it's cocktail attire. You don't need a costume, just the outfit you'd put on for a night you had been looking forward to. A birthday is a pretty good excuse to dress for the room.

Getting everyone there

We're at 10766 SW 24th St, just off the Coral Way corridor near FIU, with free parking in the plaza lot directly in front of the building and street parking along SW 24th St. From the street, it looks like a quiet old book-binding shop. Guests with a reservation scan their card at the door. The find us page has everything else your group needs to arrive without a string of where-are-you texts.

If there's a birthday, an anniversary or just a good reason coming up, pick the night, pick your arrival time and reserve your time at The Library. Bring the people who matter, raise a glass behind the bookcase, and keep the address to yourself.
